il mare
May 22, 2006
I watched the Korean movie Il Mare at home last night. Il Mare is the Italian word for the sea, the scene where the story revolved. It starred Jun Ji- Hyun (Sassy Girl, Wind struck) and Lee Jung-jae. The plot unfolded oh so slow that I was ready to press the stop button after 15 minutes of waiting for action (i.e. sex, violence
J/k). However the movie caught me off guard with its unique tale.
It was about two people developing an emotional bond and eventually love despite the time separating them. The girl, Eun joo was in 1999 while the guy, Sung-Hyun was still in 1997. There was some sort of wrinkle in time that allowed them to send each other letters through some magical mailbox. It was sort of a mix between “You’ve got mail” and “Somewhere in time”. It’s melancholic, bittersweet, gut-wrenching and interesting movie with an unexpected twist in the end. I like this line from the movie, “We are tormented not because the love goes away but because it stays and the person is not there anymore”.
If you’re not a Korean movie aficionado you might still get the chance to know what the hell I was talking about. Hollywood has a remake of the movie entitled The Lakehouse. It is a reunion of the Speed 1 team up, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. I hope that Hollywood won’t butcher the movie like they usually do to Asian Movies. But what the heck if it stars Keanu and Sandra it must be something to look forward to and I might just get the “action” I was looking for.
