Don’t judge the book but the cover
July 26, 2006This morning when I got to work, my officemate said that my boss was looking for me. I thought it was because I came 45 minutes late but I dismissed the thought immediately coz I bet she’s used to my tardiness. When I approached her I found out it was because of a book. My boss wishes to return the book I lent her, Art of war. She said she hasn’t finished reading it but was able to buy her own copy at PhP89.00, I bought mine at PhP349 the James Clavell version. Nope I wasn’t pissed that she was able to buy it at a cheaper price since the book she bought looked like those text messages compilation. Cheap paper, ugly cover. . . Ew! I wouldn’t be caught dead holding that book! As I was saying, I wasn’t pissed. I was just amused because my other officemates wanted to buy the book too. Uh-huh.
I’ve first heard, literally and figuratively, of the book about two years ago. Literally coz it was an audio book (courtesy of George). It was my first audio book experience and I didn’t like it coz I found the voice over ticklish but not ticklish enough to prevent me from falling asleep. After that I didn’t attempt to listen to audio books again. But I found the book enlightening and looked for a real book. And so I read it and after two years I’m still reading it
I mean it was the kind of book that you just don’t read once but have to read again to let the words sink in and for the lessons to register. It became one of my favorite reads. I brought it two weeks ago while we were doing our field work. My boss saw me reading it and asked about the book. A week later she begged me to let her borrow the book. Because she saw the warden president of this prison company citing words from the book. My boss never looked at me in the same light again. She looked up to me like I’m some sort of a guru. She even went as far as to say “Mahilig ka talaga sa analysis”. She even stopped asking me to make her coffee LOLS All this ruckus because of a book. I really find it funny that it wasn’t the lesson I learned from the book but the actual book itself that affected my life.
Next time I’ll carry our encyclopedia to work and we’ll see what my boss has to say.
Note:Actually, i was planning to write a review on the book, Art of War, the principles by Sun Tzu but due to some forces beyond my control (read:katamaran) I ended up with this. And i reckon anybody can get a decent review about the book from google.
