Six Degrees of Separation
November 8, 2006I recently joined Davao sale, a Davao online sales exchange. I just used to browse this site but was tempted to join when I noticed their Books category. There are a lot of cheap books on sale so the book worm in me squirmed with glee so I signed up. I posted that I’m looking for Nancy Drew hardbound books (I collect them).
There were some replies but the one reply that I found interesting was this:
hi! if you are aware of the new series of nancy drew books that were released this year lang, my barkada did the art work and he’s back here in davao for a few months lang. if may copy ka i can have him sign it hehe! My first thought was, WTF? I’m not looking for an autograph, I’m looking for a book.Duh!
But the sensible side of me who still believes in unicorns got fascinated coz it was a manifestation once again of the theory of 6 degrees of separation or commonly known as the “it’s a small world” phenomenon.
Six degrees of separation is the hypothesis that anyone on Earth can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances with no more than five intermediaries. The hypothesis was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian writer Karinthy Frigyes in a short story called Chains. The concept is based on the idea that the number of acquaintances grows exponentially with the number of links in the chain, and so only a small number of links is required for the set of acquaintances to become the whole human population.
*from Wikipedia
It never crossed my mind that I would be connected to the one who made the artwork of the book that I was holding or probably the author or if with Nancy Drew if she’s a real person.I’ve often experienced meeting a person for the first time and would find out that we have lots of friends in common even in a faraway place. In the blogosphere, I found out that mischarmed was an ex officemate and that Dennis and Leigh are friends of friends. Didn’t even reached 6 degrees. And that my father’s long lost half-brother happened to be a contractor of my brother. Meaning my brother is working for our uncle. Isn’t it amazing that we are all connected in one way or another? That I’m probably a few degrees away from Orlando Bloom? And that somebody might introduce me to him someday? And that we’ll probably get married? Alright, earth to.
It’s really a small world after all so spread some love and cheers and you’ll never know where it would end up.

agree ko! for example, last sunday, we attended a family day:
1. and as we got in the place i saw my dad talking to a lady, turned out to be his h.s. classmate.
2. we were w/ mom's friends - one was my bro's schoolmate, and the other was my cousin's schoolmate whose hubby is working in thailand where my bro and sis are also working (though not in the same company)
and so on and so forth…
let's sing "it's a small world after all…"
